(department of Digipolis)

2001: The city of Antwerp has the ambition to let every citizen participate in the digital society and entrusts its ICT partner with this mission, which in turn founds the end of that same year. Many people at that time still suffered great anxienty, and/or hesitations towards multimedia and so a large scale project was put into place to help people overcome their barriers.

To achieve this, the centre started to organize beginners’ courses for people who had never touched (some even seen!) a computer. Over 20% of Antwerp population is 60 or older, a group of people who all too often have never learned to use a computer. Many of them being scared or suspicious and reluctant to feel like going to school again, a few very important principles concerning approachability were put into place, that still hold to this day.
